The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

The meeting was called to order by the president at 6:45 PM with seven members present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was given. 

The secretary went through several e-mails that had been received.

A member mentioned he had attended a meeting on the State Torch Relay that was held at the Community Center on October 28, 2015.  He nominated two people for the relay, making a total of four nominees for Spencer County.  It was mentioned the torch will be passed to Spencer County from Perry County at Troy at 8:00 AM on a Saturday morning in September 2016.  The relay will cover 84 miles in Spencer County and there will be a parade beginning at Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana.

A member reported he had received a phone call from another member telling some of his family’s history.  He had mentioned a place called “Cook’s Hole” and asked if any members knew of the place.  No one did.

A member told she had received an e-mail from the State of Indiana informing her that she indeed was correct and the first map of the State had been made in 1817.  Upon further checking, their map said, “continuation of 1817 map”. 

The president brought up the matter of the Historian of the Year Banquet.  Several places were mentioned as locations for the banquet.  There were also several dates suggested – April 23, 2016 and April 30, 2016.  The president is going to check on the locations and see if the dates are available, the cost, and a possible menu.  More will be discussed at the February 2016 meeting.

A member had a project for the 2018 Spencer County Bicentennial.  It would be a calendar of 12 historical locations in Spencer County taken during different seasons of the year.  The appropriate picture would be placed on the corresponding month in the calendar.  It would need to go to press by June 2017 with the calendar ready to sell by September 2017.

Another member suggested having an historical bus tour for the Bicentennial.

Everyone was reminded the Society would not be having meetings in December 2015 and January 2016.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 8:35 PM.

The next meeting will be February 2, 2016, at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
