November 5, 2013

The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

The meeting was called to order by the President at 6:30 PM with six members present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was given.

The treasurer read several articles that she had seen.

The President told about the policy that has been unwritten since he became a member of the Society – the Society does not purchase family genealogy histories.  Many families have donated copies of their family history to the Genealogy Room.

The President read a letter from the Indiana State Archives concerning the need to have electronic records.  He also read a letter from the Department of Natural Resources telling about the addition of land to the Lincoln State Park.

A member mentioned that postage was increasing in January and the Society needed to update their shipping and handling charges.  The books were inventoried in October.  After having each book in the appropriate mailer, it was taken to the Post Office to find out the actual cost of the mailing.  A sheet with the old and new charges was handed out for discussion.

A motion was made and seconded to raise one book price (Lincoln and His Neighbors by Bess Ehrmann) and increase the postage on six other books.  The motion carried.  A new order form will be made and posted on the web site.

The President is going to put an article about the book that was recently reprinted, Minute Book of Little Pigeon Creek Baptist Church 1816-1840, in the local newspapers.

There was a discussion about the Historian of the Year Banquet for 2014.

Further discussion about the location, date, and speaker for the banquet followed.  Since the Spencer County Community Center is in the process of being rebuilt, there is some question if it would be done by April, the usual time the banquet is held.  It was finally decided that the Society might try having a banquet in the fall next year.  The President is going to contact the Extension Office to see about that possibility.  Plans will be discussed at the next meeting.

A member gave a brief report on the Think Lincoln group.  So far they are just doing Lincoln things for the Bicentennial Celebration in 2016.  One item being planned is a torch relay which would hit every county in Indiana.  They plan on going through 92 counties in 42 days.

It was decided that the Society would not have meetings in December and January.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.

The next meeting will be February 4, 2014 at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
