April 2, 2013
The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.
The meeting was called to order by the President at 6:48 PM with five members present.
The minutes from the last meeting were read and corrected.
The treasurer’s report was given.
A donation of $50.00 had been given to the Society. The secretary read the accompanying note.
A member mentioned the letter, which Abraham Lincoln had written while he was in Springfield, Illinois to the Honorable William Jones, was sold to an unknown bidder. The State of Indiana had also been bidding on the letter.
The secretary mentioned that only thirteen tickets had been sold for the upcoming banquet and the deadline for turning in the catering number is April 8. After some discussion, it was decided that we need to re-evaluate having a banquet next year. The Society will decorate for the banquet on Saturday morning, April 13, at 9:00 AM. The secretary will get the key from the Extension Office on Friday.
A member had a sheet with web statistics for the new web site.
The secretary reported the Society had paid for 26 reels of microfilm at $40.00 each for a total of $1,040.00 on April 13, 2012. The microfilm has not yet been put in the Genealogy Room.
The secretary asked about renewing the subscription to The Maturity Journal for the Genealogy Room. It was decided not to renew the subscription.
A member gave a report on the “Think Lincoln” meeting. He reported to them that the Historical Society was more interested in the Spencer County Bicentennial in 2018 instead of the State Bicentennial in 2016 when the State will celebrate the 200th year of Indiana becoming a state.
A member presented a document that he is going to hand out at the banquet with information about the 25th Indiana Infantry in the Civil War.
A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting. The motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 7:57 PM.
There will be no meeting in May.
The next meeting will be June 4, 2013 at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
