The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

 

The meeting was called to order by the president at 6:35 PM with eight members present.

 

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

 

The treasurer’s report was given. 

 

The secretary

 

A motion was made and seconded to renew the Indiana Landmarks membership.  The motion carried.

 

The president read requests for books from the Genealogy department.

 

A motion was made and seconded to purchase the following books as the Genealogy room already has the first two books in this series:

A motion was made and seconded to purchase the book Spencer County, IN Marriages 1941-1987.  The motion carried(Note: The Genealogy librarian stated, on October 3, that the book was already being ordered by the library, so the book was not ordered by the Society.)

 

The president read an announcement for the 27th Lincoln Colloquium which is being held in Indianapolis on October 12 and 13, 2012.

 

A member mentioned the National Historic Roads Association and the Spencer County Visitors Bureau met with him and several other people who were to be featured in an original movie that premiered at “Preserving the Historic Road”, a national conference at Indianapolis September 21, 2012.  A crew had visited Spencer County earlier this year to capture the area’s historic roads and stories on film.

 

A member said there was going to be a tour of the old Cotton Mill in Cannelton during the town’s 175 year celebration.

 

The Historian of the Year banquet was the next item of business.  A list of past honorees and possible suggestions was handed out and a discussion ensued. 

 

A motion was made and seconded on the selection of the Commemorative Historian.  The motion carried.

 

The president was going to contact someone as a possible speaker.

 

The choice for Historian of the Year was tabled until the next meeting.

 

A tentative date of Saturday, April 13, 2012, was chosen.

 

A member had several proposals that he presented to the Society:

 

He had handouts with possible styles and prices. 

 

After much discussion, it was decided to proceed with the proposal concerning the cannon.  A motion was made and seconded to purchase the plaques for the cannon.  The motion carried.  Since the cannon is on county property, the Society needs to get permission from the County Commissioners for mounting the plaques.  A member is going to talk to the Commissioners.

 

The second proposal for the stone was tabled until a later date.

 

An e-mail was read from a man inquiring about several items of local history.

 

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 8:55 PM.

 

The next meeting will be November 6, 2012 at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
