April 6, 2010

The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

The meeting was called to order by the President at 6:35 PM with seven members present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was given.

The County Historian mentioned that he had requests from three students in the same school about information of Spencer County.  The County Historian sends them a packet of information and includes the book “Lincoln and His Neighbors” by Bess Ehrmann.  He inquired if the Society wanted to send a book to each student and what should be the policy?

A motion was made and seconded to include the two books “Lincoln and His Neighbors” and “When Lincoln Went Flatboating” to each of the students who requested the information.  The motion carried.

The president read a memo from the library about the presentation from John Bower on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 6:30 PM at the Rockport Spencer County Public Library.

A member mentioned attending a meeting of the Evansville-Vanderburgh Historical Society and he wondered about possibly trading speakers.

The president said there is a new park superintendent at the Lincoln National Boyhood Memorial.  He felt it would be a good idea to invite him to a summer meeting and learn more about him.

The president said they are refurbishing the group camp at the Lincoln State Park.  In the basement of the mess hall, they are making a nature center.  The Industrial Technology class at South Spencer High School is helping with the project.  They will be making a cabinet with glass doors to store tools that Thomas Lincoln would have used.  Also, there may be a display of the different types of wood and patterns that Thomas Lincoln used in his woodworking.

A member went over a check-list of the upcoming Historian of the Year Banquet.  All items were discussed and agreed upon.

A discussion was conducted on what the Society has accomplished over the years and their recent projects.

A motion was made and seconded to subscribe to the Maturity Journal magazine for the Genealogy Room in the library.  The motion passed.

The disappearance of the signs at each end of Boner Bridge was discussed.  Members were unhappy to hear that they were gone.  Luckily, the president had pictures in a previous newsletter.

A member gave information about the upcoming event on September 17 and 18 at the Lincoln National Boyhood Memorial.  It is the 25th Annual Lincoln Colloquium.  On Friday, there will be a bus tour of historical sites.  Speeches will be made by Lincoln Historians on Saturday.  It is open to the public.

The library had a book request.  It died for lack of a motion.

A member said there is a new sign at Lincoln Ferry Park.  He was not sure who put up the sign.

The historical marker in front of Heritage Hills High School needs to be refurbished.  The president said he needed to report it to the Indiana State Historical Bureau, Sign Department, to see if they have any funds for maintenance.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 8:10 PM.

There will be no meeting in May.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
