March 2, 2010

The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

The meeting was called to order by the president at 6:30 PM with six members present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report was given.

The president read a letter concerning the problems with copying the 1950 Rockport Journal.  They were unable to complete the job and were returning the paper.  It was stated that the paper had been microfilmed by UMI and the president is trying to locate it.

The president read a letter from John Bower telling about a program that he presents called "Capturing the Soul of Indiana".  The library is trying to raise the money to have him come to our area for an adult program.  The library already has a promise of money towards the cost and would like to have the program when the weather gets warmer.  A motion was made and seconded to contribute some money if the rest of the money could be raised.  The motion carried.

The president had been contacted by Harold Morgan of Mt. Vernon, Indiana.  He is a novice historian and gives talks about this area of Southern Indiana.  He would be available to speak at a meeting.  The president is going to check on his topics.

A member mentioned that this is the Diamond Jubilee (75 years) for the Lincoln Pioneer Village.  They plan to have a big celebration on July 3rd and 4th.

The president read a letter from the Indiana State Library.  They are hosting an "Indiana Genealogy and Local History Fare"” on October 23, 2010.

There was further discussion on the upcoming Historian of the Year Banquet.  The president had been in contact with two granddaughters of Evelyn Swallow.  They were going to help with background information on her.

The menu from the Rockport Inn was finalized.

A member described a presentation at Audubon State Park in Henderson, KY where a man gave a historical presentation of Daniel Boone’s life.  He was in costume and had done a lot of research on Daniel Boone.  He stated that it was very interesting and that the Society might want to consider having him as a speaker at a meeting.

A member also mentioned a woman that does presentations on various famous women.  She is from Hawesville, KY and would be an excellent speaker.

The discussion on logos that was tabled at the last meeting was once again tabled until after the banquet.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 8:00 PM.

The next meeting will be April 6, 2010 at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
