The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, December 3, 2008 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

 

The meeting was called to order by President at 6:40 PM with four members present.

 

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

 

The treasurer’s report was given.

 

A member mentioned the Honig plaque which was remounted in the foyer of Rockport Elementary after the renovation.  It has some areas that need to be fixed.  It is estimated that the work will cost about $2,100.00.

 

The box of “postcards” that were being sold by the Society which were really copies of original postcards concerning the history of Rockport and Spencer County was brought up again.    A member made a motion to sell the color copies for $.25 each and the plain paper copies for $.10 each.  A member seconded the motion.  The motion carried.

 

A member mentioned that the Rockport High School 1928 benches are in the process of being rebuilt.  The one remaining bench was damaged during Rockport Elementary renovations.  A member is going to help with the project.

 

A member brought up the Eagle Scout project concerning the Olde Rockport Pioneer Cemetery.  He thought there should be a marker put near the flagpole in front of the Superintendent’s office with a list of names of those buried in the cemetery.  The president stated that the Society had put up a marker in the Gentryville, Indiana Garden of Memory Cemetery listing the names of those buried in the old Gentryville cemetery several years ago.

 

It was decided that the Rockport marker could be a future project for the Society.

 

A member had been receiving e-mails about cleaning up the Greathouse C emetery.  The cemetery is located west of the South Spencer High School football field.  The president said that he wouldn’t mind working some weekend.

 

A letter was read from Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana requesting a donation.

 

The library requested the purchase of an index of newspaper deaths – “Ferdinand, Dubois, Co., IN Index, 1906-1956.  It costs $50.00.  A member made a motion to purchase the book.  A member seconded the motion.  The motion carried.

 

The Historian of the Year banquet for 2009 was discussed again.  Historians of the Year were selected.

 

A motion was made to have a member purchase two new plaques – one for the library wall and one for the Historian of the Year.  A member seconded the motion.  The motion carried.

 

A motion was made to have a member as the speaker for the banquet to speak on cabinet making by Thomas and Abraham Lincoln.  A member seconded the motion.  The motion carried.

 

The president is going to check on a date for the banquet to be held at the Chrisney Community Center – Saturday, April 18 or Saturday, April 25.

 

The menu and ticket price were brought up.  A member made a motion to have Windell’s Café for the catering and $15.00 for the ticket price.  A member seconded the motion.  The motion carried.  A definite menu will be decided at the February meeting.

 

A member made a motion to adjourn the meeting.  A member seconded it.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 8:20 PM.

 

The next meeting will be February 3, 2009 at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.
