June 3, 2008

The Spencer County Historical Society met on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 in the Rockport Library Genealogy Room.

The meeting was called to order by the President at 6:45 PM with seven members present.

A member told about a call he had received from a person who mentioned a Newburgh antiques dealer, had retired and he had several George Honig paintings in his possession which he might be willing to donate to the Society, the Lincoln Pioneer Village, the library, or a museum.  The Society would need to check with him about having the legal approval to receive the paintings and that the paintings would need to be appraised.

A member also mentioned that the C. T. Baker manuscripts had been copied.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

A thank you card was read from the honorees at the Historian of the Year Banquet.

A report was given on the Historian of the Year Banquet.  Even though we had a loss of $40.61, everyone agreed that it was a very nice banquet and the Society received many compliments about it.

The treasurer’s report was given.

It was mentioned that we still owed a share on the plaque erected at the flatboat landing honoring those who took the trip in 1958.  A member made a motion to pay $500.00 of the $671.60 for the plaque.  The motion carried.

The president had a letter from the Genealogical Society of Utah.  They were asking permission to digitize and put on their web site the “Hoosier Ancestor Scrapbook:  Vol. I & II  1936-1991” which they had recently purchased from the Society.  The letter was dated May 27, 2008.  The treasurer informed the president that four books had been mailed to them on May 16, 2008 and payment still has not been received for the books.

After some discussion, it was agreed that they not be granted permission to put the book on their web site.

The president read a letter from the library about the copier/printer on which the Society had agreed to help pay $1,000.00.  They will not be receiving the copier/printer until sometime in June or early July.  It was decided that the Society will give the library a check when it comes in.

Perry County is having their sesquicentennial this year and they have printed a book – “Tell City -150 Years, A Pictorial History” for $39.00.  A member made a motion to purchase a copy of the book. The motion carried.

The president said that Birdseye, Indiana was also having a pictorial book made.  He is going to get more information on that book before we purchase it.

A meeting is to be held in the courthouse on June 10, 2008 at 10:00 AM to discuss the grant that had been received for the restoration of the Huffman Mill Bridge.

The president had a letter from the Spencer County 4-H Fair Association requesting a $25.00 sponsorship for the Genealogy award.  A member made a motion to pay the request.  The motion carried.

It was mentioned that it will soon be time for the election of officers.

The president asked about putting an ad in both county papers listing the books the Society has for sale.  A member made a motion to place the ad in both papers. The motion carried.

A member is going to check on the possibility of having the Lincoln flatboat builder as a speaker at a meeting.

A member is also going to see if the Society could sell books during the September 9, 2008 flatboat launching at the lower landing.

It was decided to not have a meeting in July.  The next meeting will be August 5, 2008 at 6:30 PM in the Genealogy Room.

A member made a motion to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM.
